An Exploratory Study on Focusing-oriented Group Art Therapy Experience

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of focusing-oriented group art therapy participants and examine the meaning of focusing-oriented art therapy by conducting focusing-oriented group art therapy for six graduate students majoring in family welfare counseling. The focusing-oriented group art therapy consisted of 4 sessions and took 12 hours in total. After conducting the group art therapy, group interview was conducted and qualitative analysis was conducted. Data was analysed by the phenomenological qualitative research method of Van Kaam, and sorted into 67 meaningful statements, 15 sub themes, 6 themes, and finally 3 categories. The first category was focusing experiential including the 'felt-sense' and ¡®recognition of felt-sense'. The second category was experience of internal exploration including ¡¯self-seeking time' and 'explore unresolved challenges'. The last categories was art therapy experiential such as, 'the unique experience of art' and 'burden of using art media' Focusing on these results, discussion on the exploration and significance of experience of focusing- oriented group art therapy was presented.
